On October 27, the third anniversary of the mass murder at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue, I finished reading an excellent book about the event and its aftermath. In Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood (Knopf, 2021), Mark Oppenheimer paints a vivid picture of a close-knit community and how the people who live there dealt with tragedy. It's very enjoyable despite the horror of the event.
