September Events Hosted by the Friends

On Monday, September 16, at 6:30 PM, meet local author Don Wilding.

Since the start of the millennium, Don Wilding has been telling stories of Cape Cod Outer Beach history through lectures, video, and the written word.  Don is the author of five books on Cape Cod history. In addition to his most recent release, “Historic Storms of Cape Cod," his other books are: "Cape Cod and the Portland Gale of 1898," “Henry Beston’s Cape Cod: How ‘The Outermost House’ Inspired a National Seashore,” "A Brief History of Eastham: On the Outer Beach of Cape Cod," and "Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Triumph & Tragedy."

Don has worked as a Cape tour guide and is a regular speaker on Cape Cod lore in Massachusetts and across New England. He was an award-winning newspaper editor, writer, and designer in Massachusetts for 36 years, including a recent stint as a contributing history columnist and photographer for Cape newspapers.

Don has also led history walks for the Harwich Conservation Trust since 2018 and was recognized as one of their "Conservationists of the Year" in 2023. He has also been an instructor of Cape Cod history courses for the Open University of Wellfleet and Nauset Community Education.

On Wednesday, September 25, at 6:15 PM, join us for an engaging author talk with local Fairhaven author Linda Kushner.

Linda's book, The Fight that Saved the Libraries cronicles her experiences from controversial split between Providence Public Library and the newly formed Community Libraries of Providence. As a key player in this five-year battle, Linda helped rally thousands of Rhode Islanders to create a new library system, preserving all nine of Providence’s neighborhood libraries.

A retired attorney, Linda represented the East Side as a state legislator for 12 years, from 1982 to 1994. Her inspiring story shows how a persons passion for problem-solving and social mobilization saved neighborhood libraries that were on the brink of closure.

Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing.
